Species List: Clown Reef, Gneering Shoals, Sunshine Coast, 06-04-2015

22 species sighted at Clown Reef, Gneering Shoals, Sunshine Coast.

Julie, Terry and David on this excursion consisting of 1 x 83 minute and 1 x 77 minute dives in water depths of 14m to 20m. 12m viz, 26C water temp and a little surge.

Surface conditions were the best they have been for quite awhile and everyone with a boat and no prior commitment was out on the water taking advantage of it. We decided to try Clown Reef on the Gneerings which is a little closer in than Wobby Rock of our last two dive excursions (about 0.5 nm). The surface did not look as clean but we were hopeful that under the top layer the viz  would open up - and so it did. Clown Reef offers a range of depths and a variety of substrate type and form. We are still struggling with our species count but were pleased to find the Gymnodoris sp. 3 again. The pair of unusual Dendrodoris nigra with the lumpy texture to the mantle have also only been seen once before from a much earlier inter-tidal search. The find of the day was the exquisite Elysia sp. 13, a new addition to our list.

Species List: Wobby Rock, Gneering Shoals, Sunshine Coast, 04-04-2015

16 species sighted at Wobby Rock, Gneering Shoals, Sunshine Coast.

Julie, Terry and David on this excursion consisting of 1 x 79 minute and 1 x 77 minute dives in water depths of 15m to 19m. 12m viz, 26C water temp and a little surge.

We returned to Wobby Rock for this trip not so much because it was teeming with nudibranchs (which it wasn't) last Tuesday but because the dirty water run off from the heavy rains has extended out a considerable distance offshore. Very lumpy surface conditions at the start of the day gradually improved as the day progressed. Only the usual suspects were sighted on this trip. Julie commented that she saw more species of sea star than nudibranchs.

Species List: Wobby Rock, Gneering Shoals, Sunshine Coast, 31-03-2015

16 species sighted at Wobby Rock, Gneering Shoals, Sunshine Coast.

Terry and David on this excursion consisting of 1 x 73 minute and 1 x 76 minute dives in water depths of 14m to 19m. 12m viz, 26C water temp and surge.

Wobby Rock is an interesting dive site out near the Blinker on the Gneering Shoals consisting of several large boulders and the crevices created in-between. We were hopeful of cleaner water plus a little more depth to offset the effects of the swell both for our own comfort and reduced effect upon the nudibranch populations. Surface conditions were much lumpier than anticipated given the low wind speed but down below was quite enjoyable. Although the species count is still down a little it was more than compensated for by the finding of some not-so-common species and the addition of a new species to our list - Eubranchus sp. 11.
