The surface looked great. The bottom was Ok for searching with a pretty strong current. The numbers of species and animals was very low. Finding Goniobranchus geometricus was quite a treat.

9 species sighted at La Balsa Park, Mooloolah River, Mooloolaba, Sunshine Coast, Qld, 15-01-2018.

A single evening shore entry dive by Julie, Terry, Gary and David of 138 minutes. Maximum depth 6.1 m, 26 C water temperature and 2 m viz.

A small amount of tidal current at the start kept the silt moving through but it kept coming so the only answer was to get down as close as possible (down & dirty is the phrase I believe) to the substrate. Not a great deal to report but it was pleasing to find Phyllodesmium undulatum again on its host gorgonian Melithaea sp. Eubranchus sp. 10 together with many of their egg masses was prevalent. Water temperature was slightly cooler than the 28 C of last time but the town water for the post dive wash down was definately well over 30 C.

14 species sighted at La Balsa Park, Mooloolah River, Mooloolaba, Sunshine Coast, Qld, 11-01-2018.

A single shore entry dive by Julie, Gary and David of 123 minutes. Maximum depth 6.6 m, 28 C water temperature and 4 m viz.

After suiting up in the sun getting into the water unfortunately provided only minimal relief. The temperature of the  top 2 metres of water was almost 29 C only dropping to 28 C as we headed towards the bottom of the channel. Mostly just some of the usual suspects sighted however a new species for our Sunshine Coast List - Discodoris sp. 5 - was a good find. The specimen seems to have a malformed right rhinophore pocket with the actual rhinophore on that side absent. We will be monitoring the river species closely this year as last year we got the impression that the warmer summer waters caused a collapse in numbers of both species sighted and their populations.

A single shore entry solo dive by Gary 166 minutes. Maximum depth 6.4 m, 28 C water temperature and 5 m viz.

The tidal current was practically nil and made the dive so cruisey. Myja longicornis was found in a nice round hydroid. The 28C water temp has arrived! So nice.
